UPDATED REQUIREMENTS FOR REFUGEE SPONSORS 2025
📅 Update Date: June 16, 2025
📌 For individuals participating in Canada’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program
IRCC has released updated guidelines outlining key responsibilities for sponsors after the arrival of refugees in Canada.
🛬 1. Upon Arrival, Sponsors Must Ensure the Following:
✅ Meet the refugee at the airport and transport them to a safe place of residence
✅ Provide essential support: food, shelter, clothing, and local transportation
✅ Assist with documentation: health card, SIN, bank account, ESL registration, etc.
✅ Support social integration, language learning, job search, and cultural orientation
✅ Commit to a minimum of 12 months of support upon arrival
✅ Report truthfully and fully to IRCC when requested
⚠️ 2. Additional Key Points:
IRCC has also highlighted certain priority processing categories, including:
🔹 Refugees requiring urgent protection
🔹 Individuals persecuted based on sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGIE – LGBTQI+)
🔹 Vulnerable persons such as those with medical or psychological issues, single mothers, etc.
If a Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) has their agreement terminated, refugees previously sponsored under that SAH will have 90 days to find a new sponsor.
👉 If you are currently a sponsor or planning to become one, read the updated requirements carefully to avoid breaching your obligations with the Canadian government.

⚠️ Failing to fulfill your sponsorship duties can jeopardize the refugee’s well-being — and may also result in your loss of eligibility to sponsor in the future.
