Update on Canadian Citizenship Law 2025
(Updated March 13, 2025)
🔹 The Government of Canada has announced it will request an additional 12-month extension to amend the “first-generation limit” on passing citizenship to children born abroad.
🔸 Currently, Canadian citizenship law only grants automatic citizenship to first-generation children born abroad. The Ontario Superior Court declared this law unconstitutional in December 2023.
📌 Temporary solution:
While Parliament is reviewing the amendments (Bill C-71), the government will provide special citizenship grants for affected individuals:
✅ Individuals born or adopted before December 19, 2023.
✅ Individuals born or adopted on or after December 19, 2023, if their Canadian parent has accumulated at least 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada before their birth or adoption (priority processing).
✅ Certain individuals born before April 1, 1949, who are still affected by the first-generation limit.
✅ Individuals who lost their Canadian citizenship under previous retention rules.
⏳ The government is requesting an extension until March 19, 2026, to finalize legislative changes and protect the rights of Canadians abroad.
