CBSA Implements Cost Recovery for Removing Inadmissible Individuals
From January 1 to October 31, 2024, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) removed over 14,000 foreign nationals deemed inadmissible under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA).
🎯 Policy Update:
Starting April 2025, CBSA will increase fees for individuals who seek to return to Canada after being removed.
📌 Details:
- Escorted removal: Fee increases from $1,500 to $12,800+.
- Unescorted removal: Fee increases from $1,500 to $3,800+.
- Fees will be based on the framework in effect at the time the individual was removed.
🎯 Purpose of the update:
- Ensure full recovery of removal costs.
- Encourage voluntary compliance with removal orders, reducing the financial burden on the government.
👥 For individuals unable to pay removal costs upfront, CBSA will cover the costs to ensure timely removal and recover them later if the individual seeks to return to Canada.
