Canada Commemorates World Refugee Day 2025
📅 June 20, 2025
On World Refugee Day, the Government of Canada reaffirms its strong commitment to addressing global humanitarian needs, tackling the root causes of forced displacement, and pursuing long-term solutions for refugees and displaced populations.
🔹 As of 2024, the number of people forcibly displaced due to war, crisis, persecution, and climate change has exceeded 123.2 million — the highest figure ever recorded.
🔹 Over the past year, Canada welcomed more than 49,000 refugees through various resettlement programs:
- Government-Assisted Refugees
- Privately Sponsored Refugees
- The Blended Visa Office-Referred Program
🔹 For the 2024–2026 period, Canada aims to:
- Resettle 12,000 refugees from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia
- Resettle 4,000 from the Americas
- Resettle 4,000 refugees from Sudan
This includes women, girls, LGBTQI+ individuals, religious minorities, and those directly impacted by conflict.
🔹 Canada continues to work closely with trusted partners such as UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to protect the most vulnerable populations.
🔹 This year alone, the government has committed:
- CAD 50.4 million in flexible funding over four years to UNHCR
- Expanded support for Sudanese refugees:
▪️ 4,000 additional resettlement spots under government programs
▪️ 700 more under private sponsorship
▪️ Family reunification target increased from 3,250 to over 5,000 applications
In total, these measures will enable nearly 10,000 individuals to resettle safely and securely in Canada.
