Canada Pauses Parent & Grandparent Sponsorship Applications
Important announcement from the Canadian government!
The permanent residency sponsorship program for parents and grandparents has been paused for new applications until further notice, according to a directive from Immigration Minister Marc Miller.

The Canadian government remains committed to its goal of family reunification, but it will now focus on processing applications that were received last year.
💡 Goal: Reduce the backlog of applications and speed up processing times.
📊 Current Statistics
- 40,000+ applications are currently in the backlog (as of the end of 2023).
- 24 months: The average processing time for a sponsorship application.
- For 2024:
- 35,700 people were randomly selected to submit applications.
- 15,000 applications will be processed under the family reunification program.
🔍 New Immigration Policies
Under the immigration levels plan, the Canadian government aims to reduce total immigration numbers over the next three years.
- 2024 Target: Admit more than 24,000 people through the parent and grandparent sponsorship stream.
