Allocation of International Students by Province in Canada 2024

Canada allocated the number of international students by province in 2024 as follows:

1. Net Zero Growth Model in the first year:

– The new target is to approve 364,000 study permits in 2024 (accounting for a 20% deferral rate for students extending their stay).

=> Based on a 60% approval rate for study permit applications, the target of 364,000 approved study permits translates to a cap of 606,000 study permit applications received for 2024.

2. Excluding the exempted group from the limit:

– Elementary, secondary, and postgraduate students are exempt from the limit.

=> Approximately 140,000 students from these groups are not counted in the data. Therefore, the target for approved study permits in 2024 is 236,000, equivalent to approximately 393,000 study permit applications allocated.

3. Finalizing the allocation by province and territory:

In total, approximately 552,000 study permit applications have been allocated to provinces and territories under the limit model.

It is expected that approximately 292,000 study permits will be approved, representing a 28% decrease compared to 2023.

Some provinces and territories will receive more international students in 2024 compared to 2023, while others will receive fewer students.

4. Therefore:

– The new policy may impact international students. Students should prepare thoroughly and choose the appropriate province or territory.

– The new policy is still being refined, and there may be future changes. Students planning to study in Canada should stay updated with the latest information.
