Alberta’s New Policy: Open Work Permits for Eligible Candidates 2024
Alberta’s new temporary policy allows candidates in the Alberta Opportunity Stream and Rural Renewal Stream to receive support letters for a maximum 2-year open work permit.
1. Eligibility:
– Applicants whose applications are pending as of August 26, 2024. To be eligible, applicants must have a work permit expiring from May 7, 2024 to December 31, 2024, at the time of application.
– Applicants whose applications were rejected from May 7, 2024 to August 26, 2024, due to their work permit expires in 2024.
2. Assessment Process:
– Applicants do not need to submit a separate application.
– AAIP will automatically contact eligible applicants via email, based on the work permit expiry date declared in the application.
3. Applicant Requirements:
– Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the minimum requirements of the 2 streams and have a valid job offer in Alberta.
– Those with expired work permits must also demonstrate that they have maintained lawful status or are eligible to restore temporary resident status.
4. Benefits of the Policy:
– Eligible applicants will receive an open work permit with a maximum duration of 2 years.
– This allows applicants to continue working and maintain eligibility for nomination and permanent residency.
– The final assessment of eligibility for a provincial nomination will not occur before 2025.
5. Priority Processing:
The new policy focuses on final decisions for AAIP nomination applications with work permits expiring between January 1, 2024, and May 6, 2024, and applications with work permits expiring in early 2025.
