2025 Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP)

Family reunification is a vital part of Canada’s immigration system, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their loved ones to live and work in Canada. Through the Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Sponsorship Program, the government is committed to reuniting as many families as possible.
📌 In 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) plans to accept up to 10,000 complete sponsorship applications under the PGP program.
🔹 Who will receive an invitation to apply?
Since there are still many Interest to Sponsor Forms from 2020 in the pool, IRCC will continue to send invitations to randomly selected potential sponsors from that group instead of accepting new registrations.
📌 This is the same approach IRCC has used from 2020 to 2024.
🔹 How long does it take to process PGP applications?
- For applications outside Quebec: Approximately 24 months.
- For applications in Quebec: Approximately 48 months, due to the province’s lower family sponsorship admission limits.
To reduce wait times, IRCC strives to balance the number of PGP applications with the annual immigration targets. However, since Canada has reduced its overall immigration targets in the 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan, IRCC has also adjusted the number of new PGP applications it can process.
🔹 What if you haven’t submitted an Interest to Sponsor Form?
IRCC understands that this approach impacts families who did not have the chance to submit a sponsorship application in 2020. However, there is still another way for parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for an extended period, which is through the Super Visa.
✅ Super Visa allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 5 years per entry and can be extended while in Canada.
✅ Super Visa also allows multiple entries for up to 10 years.
✅ Recently, IRCC has relaxed health insurance requirements, making it easier to obtain a Super Visa.
